Global warming is likely to be the greatest threat of the 21st century. Find out its causes and effects, but most importantly the solutions to prevent climate change. Climate experts are formal the Earth is warming up at a steady pace. The reason for this is the increase in human-caused greenhouse gases, which has led to health, ecological and humanitarian crises. Despite this, the fight against climate change is a real opportunity to transition to a low carbon society, creating jobs, innovation and social justice locally and internationally. What is the meaning of global warming? What are the causes of global warming and its consequences? And finally what are the possible solutions? 01. Solutions Global warming solutions The Solar Impulse Label is granted to innovative solutions to global warming that meet high standards of sustainability and profitability. Each solution goes through a strict assessment process performed by independent experts. 02. Contribute What can you do? Global warming is a phenomenon of climate change characterized by a general increase in average temperatures of the Earth, which modifies the weather balances and ecosystems for a long time. It is directly linked to the increase of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, worsening the greenhouse effect. Photo by Wolf Schram on Unsplash In fact, the average temperature of the planet has increased by Celsius Fahrenheit compared to the end of the 19th century. Each of the last three decades has been warmer than all previous decades since the beginning of the statistical surveys in 1850. At the pace of current CO2 emissions, scientists expect an increase of between and to in average temperature by 2100. If no action is taken, it would have harmful consequences to humanity and the biosphere. 04. Causes Global warming causes The greenhouse effect is a natural phenomenon. However, the increase in greenhouse gases is linked to human activities. It is thus no surprise that the world's leading climate scientists believe that human activities are very likely the main cause of global warming since the mid-twentieth century, mostly because of Photo by Skeeze on Pixabay Fossil fuels The massive use of fossil fuels is obviously the first source of global warming, as burning coal, oil and gas produces carbon dioxide - the most important greenhouse gas in the atmosphere - as well as nitrous oxide. Photo by markusspiske on Pixabay Deforestation The exploitation of forests has a major role in climate change. Trees help regulate the climate by absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere. When they are cut down, this positive effect is lost and the carbon stored in the trees is released into the atmosphere. Photo by Erlend Ekseth on Unsplash Intensive farming Another cause of global warming is intensive farming, not only with the ever-increasing livestock, but also with plant protection products and fertilizers. In fact, cattle and sheep produce large amounts of methane when digesting their food, while fertilizers produce nitrous oxide emissions. Photo by Bas Emmen on Unsplash Waste disposal Waste management methods like landfills and incineration emit greenhouse and toxic gases - including methane - that are released into the atmosphere, soil and waterways, contributing to the increase of the greenhouse effect. Photo by Dominik Vanyi on Unsplash Mining Modern life is highly dependent on the mining and metallurgical industry. Metals and minerals are the raw materials used in the construction, transportation and manufacturing of goods. From extraction to delivery, this market accounts for 5% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Photo by Holger Link on Unsplash Overconsumption Finally, overconsumption also plays a major role in climate change. In fact, it is responsible for the overexploitation of natural resources and emissions from international freight transport, which both contribute to global warming. Photo by Skeeze on Pixabay 05. Effects Global warming effects Here are some consequences that are documented in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report on Global Warming Photo by Skeeze on Pixabay 1. On biodiversity The increase of temperatures and the climate upheavals disturb the ecosystems, modify the conditions and cycles of plant reproduction. The scarcity of resources and climate change are changing life habits and migratory cycles of animals. We are already witnessing the disappearance of many species - including endemic species - or, conversely, the intrusion of invasive species that threaten crops and other animals. Global warming therefore impacts biodiversity. It is the balance of biodiversity that is modified and threatened. According to the IPCC, a average rise might put 20-30% of species at risk of extinction. If the planet warms by more than 2°C, most ecosystems will struggle. 2. On oceans Because of global warming, permafrost and ice are melting massively at the poles, increasing the sea level at a rate never known before. In a century, the increase reached 18 cm including 6 cm in the last 20 years. The worst case scenario is a rise of up to 1m by 2100. The acidification of the oceans is also of great concern. In fact, the large amount of CO2 captured by the oceans makes them more acidic, arousing serious questions about the adaptability of seashells or coral reefs. 3. On humans Human beings are not spared by these upheavals. Climate change is affecting the global economy. It is already shaking up social, health and geopolitical balances in many parts of the world. The scarcity of resources like food and energy gives rise to new conflicts. Rising sea levels and floods are causing population migration. Small island states are in the front line. The estimated number of climate refugees by 2050 is 250 million people. 4. On the weather For decades now, meteorologists and climatologists around the world have been watching the effects of global warming on the weather phenomena. And the impact is huge more droughts and heatwaves, more precipitations, more natural disasters like floods, hurricanes, storms and wildfires, frost-free season, etc. 06. Prevention Global warming prevention Good news - there are ways to reduce global warming. But how to react to climate change? What solutions to consider? 1. Renewable energies The first way to prevent climate change is to move away from fossil fuels. What are the alternatives? Renewable energies like solar, wind, biomass and geothermal. 2. Energy & water efficiency Producing clean energy is essential, but reducing our consumption of energy and water by using more efficient devices LED light bulbs, innovative shower systems is less costly and equally important. 3. Sustainable transportation Promoting public transportation, carpooling, but also electric and hydrogen mobility, can definitely help reduce CO2 emissions and thus fight global warming. 4. Sustainable infrastructure In order to reduce the CO2 emissions from buildings - caused by heating, air conditioning, hot water or lighting - it is necessary both to build new low energy buildings, and to renovate the existing constructions. 5. Sustainable agriculture & forest management Encouraging better use of natural resources, stopping massive deforestation as well as making agriculture greener and more efficient should also be a priority. 6. Responsible consumption & recycling Adopting responsible consumption habits is crucial, be it regarding food particularly meat, clothing, cosmetics or cleaning products. Last but not least, recycling is an absolute necessity for dealing with waste. A challenge, 1000 Solutionsto change the world A label focused on both the environment and profitability. Staff Profile Twitter Reply Businesses are racing to develop new technologies and experimental supply chain models to increase parcel volume, expedite deliveries, and delight the challenge of final mile delivery continues to be a massive pain point for you work in the transportation and logistics industry? Get business insights on the latest tech innovations, market trends, and your competitors with data-driven research. As consumers increasingly turn to ecommerce for all their shopping needs, speedy fulfillment and distribution isn’t just a “nice to have”—it’s the expectation of every online shopping experience. And if logistics companies and their retail partners want a shot at thwarting the ever-looming threat of Amazon Prime, it needs to be a priority. As a result, businesses have begun racing to develop new technologies and experimental supply chain models to increase parcel volume, expedite deliveries, and delight customers — all while trying to cut costs. Unfortunately, one of their biggest expenses and challenges is same-day, final mile delivery. What is last mile delivery? In a product’s journey from warehouse shelf, to the back of a truck, to a customer doorstep, the “last mile” of delivery is the final step of the process — the point at which the package finally arrives at the buyer’s door. In addition to being a key to customer satisfaction, last mile delivery is both the most expensive and time-consuming part of the shipping process. What is the last mile problem? If you’ve ever tracked a package in real time online and saw that it was “out for delivery” for what felt like forever, you already understand that the last mile problem is inefficiency. That’s because the final leg of shipment typically involves multiple stops with low drop sizes. In rural areas, delivery points along a particular route could be several miles apart, with only one or two packages getting dropped off at each one. In cities, the outlook isn’t much better; what urban areas make up for in stop proximity is quickly negated by the near constant delays of traffic congestion. The costs and inefficiencies of the last mile problem have only been further compounded by the continuous rise of ecommerce in US retail sales, which has dramatically increased the number of parcels delivered each day, as well as raised customer expectations to include not just fast, but also free, delivery. What are the costs of last mile delivery? As a share of the total cost of shipping, last mile delivery costs are substantial—comprising 53% overall. And with the growing ubiquitousness of “free shipping,” customers are less willing to foot a delivery fee, forcing retailers and logistics partners to shoulder the cost. As such, it’s become the first place they’re looking to implement new technologies and drive process improvements. Like what you’re reading? Technology solutions to improve last mile logistics With the rise of the gig economy, many consumers are already familiar with the concept of crowdsourcing local services through digital platforms like Uber, Airbnb, and Postmates. Location-based crowdsourcing allows consumers to open a mobile app to hail a ride, book a place to stay, order coffee to the office, hire a handyman to mount a TV, send flowers to that special someone, or even schedule takeout to arrive just as they’re walking through their apartment door. Postmates Rafael Henrique/SOPA The crowdsourcing model has been prevalent in transportation, hospitality, and food delivery for some time now, and retailers are eyeing its low startup costs, asset-light operations, and improved customer experience to ease their last mile delivery woes. With crowdsource technology, retailers, logistics partners, and consumers can connect directly with local, non-professional couriers who use their own transportation to make deliveries. Companies can get their online orders to customers faster, and customers can get their items when and where they want them. The freedom to make on-demand and scheduled deliveries also ensures that customers are home at the time of delivery—eliminating the need for a second or third attempt. And with the ongoing integration and enhancement of automation across industries, it’s likely we’ll start seeing delivery robots, drones, and self-driving vehicles making many of these drop-offs in the not-so-far future. She was a former member of the Fireflies and a member of the Washington Liberation Front.[2] Biography Background and early life Mel was originally a member of the Fireflies in Salt Lake City, Utah, and trained as a medic under Dr. Jerry Anderson, a brilliant surgeon who was considered by his colleagues to be the only person capable of manufacturing a vaccine against the Cordyceps brain infection. During her time with the Fireflies, Mel and Abby had already become close friends, as evidenced by her thanking Abby for recommending that her father teach Mel more complicated medical procedures. The surgeon's death by Joel Miller's hands in April 2034 destroyed any hope the group had of curing the Cordyceps infection and ultimately was one of the leading factors in the Fireflies' disbanding.[2] Mel ended up in a group of ex-Fireflies with Jerry's daughter Abby Anderson, along with Owen Moore, Manny Alvarez, Nora Harris, Jordan, Nick and Leah in search of a new place to call home. They eventually reached Seattle, Washington, and were taken in by the Washington Liberation Front, dubbed by the WLF's leader Isaac Dixon as the "Salt Lake Crew".[2] Mel was made a medic in the WLF's military, and eventually formed a romantic relationship with Owen and became pregnant with his child.[1] When Abby discovered where Joel's brother Tommy Miller was living, Mel was one of the ones who agreed to pursue the lead in hopes of finding Joel and making him pay for what he had done to them.[3] Jackson Abby orders Mel to tourniquet Joel's leg. When the group made it to Jackson, Wyoming, Mel revealed to Owen that she was pregnant with his child, leading Owen to wander from the hideout they had established at the Baldwin mansion. Mel was at the mansion when Abby brought Joel and his brother Tommy back to the fortified location where they had set up camp. She watched as Abby viciously beat Joel to death, and was one of several who argued that they should kill Ellie, as well, to tie up loose ends. Owen, however, talked them down, making the point that they would be no better than Joel if they did so. Ironically, while she considered Joel to deserve worse than what he got, Mel was horrified by the cruelty that she witnessed and regretted taking part in the act, as well as being disturbed by what Abby was capable of. She and the rest of the group returned to Seattle without further complications. However, Mel distanced herself from Abby afterward, and Owen became quiet and withdrawn, eventually deciding that he wanted nothing more to do with the WLF or their war against the Seraphites. Seattle Mel was assigned with Abby and Manny to head out to the forward operating base FOB past the stadium, cleared for duty despite being in the late stages of pregnancy. While feelings were strained between the two following Jackson, they exchanged pleasantries for a bit. Mel confessed that she felt Owen had been avoiding her recently, and asked if he'd said anything about it to Abby. Before Abby could answer, however, their truck was attacked by a Seraphite hunting party, sending them crashing into an abandoned home improvement store. Forced to fight their way past the infected and the Seraphites, they were cornered at a gas station but were rescued by a patrol of Wolves who killed the remaining assailants and took them to the FOB. Having been shot in the shoulder during the skirmish, Mel was taken to the medical facilities to be stitched up. There, she met up with Nora. Later, Mel was harshly interrogated by Isaac on Owen's whereabouts following Danny's death and Abby's disappearance, though she did not reveal anything.[2] Mel later met up with Abby at the aquarium, where Abby asked her to treat Yara's broken arm. Mel determined that Yara's arm was beyond saving, and sent Abby out with Lev to get supplies to amputate it safely. Following their return, Mel surgically amputated Yara's broken limb and stitched up the wound, saving Yara's life.[3] The next day, she told Abby that she planned to leave with Owen and the others for Santa Barbara, California, provided that Abby didn't come with them, believing that Abby's actions were merely an attempt to regain Owen's favor and interfere with her relationship. When Lev ran away, Mel questioned Abby's motives, but Abby insisted that she was trying to do the right thing and convinced Owen to stay with Mel and finish repairs on their sailboat. While they were gone, Ellie broke into the aquarium and killed Alice, their guard dog, and snuck up on Mel and Owen arguing over whether or not to pursue Abby to the Seraphites' island. As Mel began to leave, the couple were caught off-guard by Ellie. Holding them at gunpoint, she ordered Mel to point to Abby's location on a map, despite Owen's pleas for her not to as he believed Ellie would kill them once she had what she wanted. Though Mel initially agreed, she was slow to act, causing Ellie to become angry and point the gun at her. Owen leapt at Ellie to grab the gun, but she shot him in the chest. Mel drew her knife and attempted to kill Ellie, but was overpowered and stabbed in the neck. Ellie approached Owen, who explained with his dying breath that Mel was pregnant. Ellie was horrified to discover that the woman she had just killed was far along with a child. Tommy and Jesse arrived and took the shaken Ellie away from the aquarium.[4] Abby and Lev found Mel and Owen's bodies when they returned to the aquarium. Deeply horrified by their deaths, Abby broke down, but Lev found and gave her the map that Ellie had used in her failed interrogation, which also marked where their base was. The two left to avenge their fallen friends.[5] Personality and traits Mel was a strong-headed but caring individual, showing that she was as capable as any other WLF member. She often put her medical expertise to use to help others, especially her friends.[2] However, her independent nature and stubbornness were dangerous to her well-being. She endangered herself and her unborn child by traveling alone to the aquarium, through areas of the city not controlled by the WLF.[2] Mel's approach to violence was strictly needs-based, displayed in how she would only kill in self-defense, like when Ellie attacked her and Owen.[4] She only considered killing others in circumstances she feared would later threaten her safety, revealed in how she agreed that leaving Tommy and Ellie alive was too great a risk.[1] She was opposed to torture, being the only member of the group visibly perturbed by Abby's brutality and the only member to admit regret taking part in Joel's murder despite believing his brutal death was more than justified.[2] Mel was among the more compassionate members of Abby's group, evident in how she had a sense of pity for her enemies, especially children.[3] Gallery Mel's full body Art of Mel. FAQMultiplayer - is it available in the game? No. There is no multiplayer mode in the current version of The Last of Us Part II. TLoU 2 only has a single player campaign to offer. Multiplayer will be available in the future. However, details about this mode have been shrouded in mystery at the moment. The Last of Us Part II is a much longer game than its predecessor and players shouldn't complain about the lack of content in the newest production of Naughty Dog studio. The lack of multiplayer may also be considered as good news for trophy hunters - the Platinum trophy can be earned just by playing the single player mode. Game length - how long is the story campaign of TLoU 2?The game is clearly longer than the first part of The Last of Us - it should take about 25-30 hours to complete the campaign for the first time, assuming that you will spend some time exploring your locations and that you won't play on the lowest difficulty level. For more information about the length of the game and its main attractions, check another page of our guide - How long does it take to run-through The Last Of Us 2?. Platinum trophy - is it hard to get it?Earning the platinum trophy in The Last of Us Part II should be much easier than in the first part. This is due to two main factors - in TLoU2 there are no trophies related to multiplayer content or trophies related to difficulty levels. The game can be played on any difficulty level, including the lowest level. Most trophies available in The Last Of Us Part II consist in finding secrets and improving the equipment of the controlled character. However, there are no trophies in the game that would require you to grind. For more information, check out our trophy guide, in which we have described every available trophy in detail. Co-op - is it available in the game? No, TLoU2 does not offer co-op mode and is designed for 1 player only. As in the case of the first part, the character we control may be accompanied in some stages by a partner controlled by artificial intelligence. In Ellie's case, it could be Dina. Unfortunately, you cannot give any commands to the AI companion, but it doesn't make any huge mistakes or flaws during the gameplay. You also don't have to protect your companion all the time. Only in extreme situations his or her life may be in danger. Chapter selection feature - is it available in the game? Yes, TLoU 2 includes "chapter select" feature. In the main menu you can choose which section of the main campaign you want to play, for example, to replay a particular chapter. As you select different chapters and stages, the game displays information about found items and achievements in the selected difficulty level. You can easily identify the stages where you haven't gained 100% of the secrets yet and repeat them in order to collect the omitted collectibles. A list of all stages can be found on the first page of our walkthrough of The Last of Us 2. Jumping on command - can you jump in the game? Yes, one of the novelties in The Last of Us 2 is the addition of a dedicated button for jumping - this is the X button. The main application of this action is to jump over smaller and larger gaps. It is worth noting that some locations require long jumps - in such cases jump button must be pressed during sprint you must hold the L1 button. Additionally, jump will only succeed if you activate it just before reaching the edge of the floor from which you have to bounce off. Choices - can I make any decisions in the game? No, the story campaign in The Last Of Us Part II is linear. You don't have any impact on the main story. TLoU2 does not allow you to choose any ending this game has only 1 ending. Also, you can't decide which characters you would like to spare or save them from misfortune. Open world - is there complete freedom of exploration? No, TLoU 2 is not a game with an open world that you could explore freely, as in Horizon Zero Dawn or Days Gone. However, should be noted that some locations in the game are semi-open. This means that different paths can lead to your destination and you can explore locations which are not connected to the main plot. The most open stage in the game is Seattle downtown, which we discussed in more detail in our world atlas. It is a fairly extensive location where you can move freely. The controlled character does not have to focus on the main storyline right away, but can explore optional spots first. Stages with a similar structure had already appeared in the previous games developed by Naughty Dog. A similar scheme was available during the Western Ghats chapter in Uncharted The Lost Legacy. Obstacle in the way - why can't I get past it? As you explore the game world, you may encounter obstacles, such as fallen trees or fortifications similar to those in the picture above. The controlled character may not be able to bypass this type of obstacles and it's not a bug in the game, but a deliberate blockade set by game designers. The solution to this problem is very simple - you have to mount a horse and jump over an obstacle. HUD - can I deactivate it completely? Yes, The Last of Us 2 allows you to disable the entire user interface or only selected elements of the HUD. You must go to the HUD tab in game options. TLoU 2 allow you, among other things, to hide the crosshair, health and ammunition information, hints, interaction icons or button icons displayed during combat. Young Ellie - does she appear in the game? Yes, despite the fact that for most of the campaign an adult Ellie is present, a young heroine also appears in selected scenes of the game. During this stages her appearance looks similar to the one known from the first part of the series. However, Ellie's model in TLoU 2 is much more detailed. Climbing stages - are they present in the game? Yes, in some locations of the game you have to complete climbing sequences. Fortunately, they are not very complex and serve more as a variety of gameplay than an integral part of it. As you climb you may be forced to use a rope or make a long jump. In the latter case, you should be careful, because a fall from a high height after a badly measured jump may result in a fall into an abyss and death of the character. For more information and advice, check out the Exploration chapter of our guide. Vehicles - can I drive them? There are various vehicles in TLoU 2 - they are used by members of the WLF to travel around Seattle. Unfortunately, you can't drive in cars, although in several stages you will have to shoot from the passenger seat. The only fully interactive vehicle is the boat, which is primarily used during The Flooded City stage played as Ellie. The heroine uses a boat in the aforementioned mission to travel through flooded areas. The majority of the boat section is linear, although there are several larger areas with optional locations you can explore. New game mode+ - does the game have it? Yes, The Last of Us 2 features a New Game Plus mode - you unlock it after completing the game on any difficulty. The NG+ mode allows you to transfer your earned upgrades and equipment. This should make it easier to replay the game and get trophies for improving all weapons and unlocking all passive skills. Swimming - can heroes swim? Yes, Ellie and Abby can swim - you have to do this to reach certain locations. Furthermore, playable characters are also able to dive in selected locations. You may need to do this to reach a neighboring location or, for example, to find a secret or some valuable loot lying at the bottom. Controls Movement.
